Ooey Gooey brownies by the campfire!
Camping season is upon us!! These “Skillet Brownies” will become your new family camping favourite. Our family loves them and I hope yours will as well. They are so easy to prepare and always make for a fun and welcoming dessert. I will add that this recipe is sweet and full of butter and sugar, but life is about balance right? I believe in treating yourself and using natural ingredients.
Why in a Skillet?
Why not is my response!! Baking brownies in a skillet gives them a nice crunchy bottom and ooey gooey chocolatey goodness throughout. The key is to prepare your dry ingredients at home and place in labeled plastic bags. This saves having to bring extra ingredients along on your trip.
Where to bake?
You are going to bake these in your cast iron skillet right on the bbq!
Start with getting your skillet heated up on the bbq and then melt your butter.
Once the butter is melted, remove from the heat, and combine your dry ingredients with the eggs in a bowl. You don’t want to add the eggs to the warm skillet because they will start to scramble. We have found that it’s best to add the melted butter to the bowl after the other ingredients are combined. After you pour in the butter, mix the ingredients as you normally would. The batter will be pretty thick. That’s ok. Put your skillet back on the heat and pour in the batter. You will have to pat it down and flatten it out.
If your bbq has a thermometer, set the heat to around 325 degrees. Food tends to cook more quickly in cast iron so it’s ok to go with a lower temperature. I had mine at around 325 and the brownies were done in 35 minutes. Your cooking time may vary. Test for doneness as you would any other baked good, stick a toothpick in and when it comes out clean, they are done!Print
